Prom night
Always and Forever, Lara JeanProm night is a celebration of Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky’s last high-school dance together, but its deepest significance lies in the passage it marks: the couple can savor the night while knowing that their life together in high school is ending and college will soon separate them. Stormy’s ring, a final dance, a song Peter arranges, and a surprise birthday gathering make the evening a ceremony of memory as much as romance.
Preparation and the ring
On the morning of prom, Kitty Song visits Lara Jean while she is painting her toenails and offers an unvarnished verdict on the pink polish: it looks as though Lara Jean dipped her toes in Pepto-Bismol. The comic exchange brings the evening’s elaborate anticipation down to the intimate scale of sisters sharing a bedroom and an opinion about nail color.
Before going downstairs, Lara Jean puts on Stormy’s ring. Wearing it on prom night, she thinks of Stormy looking down happily and of the many dances Stormy attended. The ring carries a remembrance of a woman whose advice and example have mattered to Lara Jean; it lets the absent Stormy accompany her into a milestone she cannot witness in person.
Peter is waiting on the couch with his mother when Lara Jean comes downstairs. His knee is bouncing, a telltale sign that he is nervous too. He has spent the previous week asking what her dress looks like, while Lara Jean has kept it a surprise. When he sees her, he stands and tells her she looks wonderful. Their exchanged nervousness and the delayed reveal make the prom entrance a shared moment rather than simply a presentation of a dress.
A last dance and a song
At the dance, Lara Jean watches Peter dance with Ashanti. He stands tall and straight, and, at a pivotal moment in the song, dips her to the cheers of the crowd. Lara Jean takes pride not only in Peter’s dancing but in the way people respond to him: they celebrate him because he is kind and makes others feel good. The dance gives him a send-off that belongs to the wider school community as well as to Lara Jean.
The night narrows again to the two of them for one last dance. They are quiet, aware that the summer still lies ahead but that their time together as high-school students is ending. Lara Jean thinks they will never again be there in exactly the same way. Peter punctures the solemnity by pointing out a student trying to rest a hand casually on a date’s backside, allowing the couple’s familiar humor to sit beside their recognition of change.
Peter then says he knows what their song should be. Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” begins to play in the hotel ballroom, and Lara Jean realizes that Peter arranged for it. The song turns a private declaration into a public, shared moment: she is moved to tears, accuses him of having made it happen, and he answers that it is fate. Its title resonates with the question the evening leaves open—not whether their high-school life can continue unchanged, but whether they can stay together as it changes.
Birthday surprise at midnight
After prom, Peter takes Lara Jean to their regular booth, where pale pink balloons are tied and a candle-covered cake waits. Friends rise from behind booths and menus: Lucas Krapf, Gabe, Keisha, Darrell, Pammy, and Chris. The surprise gathers their circle around Lara Jean in the same prom finery, extending the formal night into a celebration made by friends.
Peter checks his watch: it is midnight, and Lara Jean’s birthday has begun. She hugs him and says that the surprise is exactly what she wanted for a birthday on prom night, although she had not known it. The shift from prom to birthday happens in a single moment, joining a public rite of passage to a private expression of Peter’s attentiveness. Her friends’ presence also makes the occasion more than a couple’s celebration: the night’s affection is shared across the group.
A threshold between school and what follows
Prom night holds two emotional registers together. Lara Jean is happy to see Peter celebrated by his classmates and delighted by his birthday surprise, yet their final dance makes clear that the version of their relationship formed in high school is ending. The summer ahead offers time before college begins, not a way to return to the night’s particular arrangement of school, friends, and shared routines.
That threshold is part of a larger sequence of changing roles in the story. Lara Jean’s graduation is imminent, and the family will soon gather for Dan Covey and Trina Rothschild’s wedding, where the sisters join Trina in the ceremony and dance with their father. Soon after, Lara Jean and Peter plan to watch the Perseids meteor shower on the night before she leaves for college. These later occasions extend prom night’s pattern: dresses, songs, family and friends, and remembered objects give shape to departures, while the people involved begin to imagine what their bonds will look like next.
The evening’s most telling keepsakes are not only the ring and the song but the memories attached to them. Stormy’s ring carries a past into Lara Jean’s milestone; “Let’s Stay Together” gives the couple a phrase for the uncertain future; and the surprise at midnight marks the transition from one kind of celebration to another. Prom night cannot preserve high school, but it allows Lara Jean and Peter to recognize what is ending while making a memory they can carry beyond it.
